I’ve been reading “karate shoukoushi kohinata minoru” So in this post i will review it and will also tell you the reason of why Manga despite being awesome didn’t get an Anime adaption. A couple of days ago i finished with “History’s strongest disciple kenichi” and i was kinda addicted to the similar story-line and at that time i thought that “karate shoukoushi kohinata minoru” is the perfect manga that i can read.
Kohinata Minoru is a college student at a college that is popular for its sports rather than academic orientation. Although he starts out as a gymnast alongside his friend, Nana, Minoru is bullied by the higher ranked gymnasts. One evening, a karate student at the college, Mutou Ryuuji, witnesses Minoru being bullied and comes to the rescue… but his intentions aren’t to save Minoru, but to drag him into the world of karate. Minoru makes new friends and learns some of their dark pasts, including a shocking death that reveals motives for revenge.
karate shoukoushi kohinata minoru Review
While the overall plot as mentioned above looks awesome and it is, this Manga is not for audience below 18 as it comes under the genre “Seinen.” The Manga is about a weak willed and coward main character who transfers from Gymnastic club to Karate club so that he can become strong enough to protect his friends and loved ones. I will divide the Manga in three phases so it will become easier to understand where the story went wrong and why this Manga didn’t get an Anime adaption despite being an awesome read.
Phase 01 – Phase one in the Manga shows the training of our Main character Minoru, and how strong he becomes at a steady pace. Also what kind of hardships he faces, This is one of the most exciting phase of the Manga as we see all characters including our Main character grow. The determination to do and prove something clearly comes out of the Manga itself. Kohinata Minoru’s first Karate test and tournament, His first rival and match with his rival which leads him to loss and how he grows from that. His perfect sense in the field of Martial arts make him grow stronger than ever! and all the changes that Minoru goes through are exciting to see and read.
Phase 02 – The second phase is a bit serious where we get to see Minoru and friends caught in some deadly troubles that involves guns and other weapons. This all happens when Minoru and his friends went for training camps to “Okinawa” since Okinawa is also known as the birthplace of Karate, We see Minoru and his friends learning something important as well as growing steadily.
Whereas on the other hand we also see Minoru getting involved in underground fights where he has to fight a dangerous guy which Minoru is scared to fight and Mutou (Another character) has to come and save him. Which leads to a little bit of disappointment. Since in phase o1 we see Minoru growing stronger and determined and when it comes to real fight where you almost have to kill your enemy where he and his friends being in danger, Minoru is scared as hell where he can’t move.
At that time i was like “C’mon man, you’re learning Karate to protect and instead you’re getting scared, if you’re like this who the hell will protect your friends.”
Since Mutou (Another character) comes and saves him, on the other hand he also gives him a lecture which is worthy for readers too
“When someone being ‘in-human’ to you and your friends, to stop that someone you have to become stronger! Remember protecting someone in real fight means getting ready to kill or to be killed, running away like a coward won’t save you!”
Phase 03 – In phase three Minoru continues his training and grows, We see another Karate tournament but this time on some great level which includes some incredible great fights which is something you guys should must read. We also get to see the some dark story of pasts of some characters which is quite interesting and makes the Manga an awesome read. Then slowly the story moves to “Knock outs” arc where our characters will fight in professional and international world from small college tournaments.
Why Manga didn’t get Anime adaptation?
As you can see in the phase 03 the story takes quite a big leap, But it makes one thing certain. The Manga lacks goal and its been happening right since phase 01. What i mean is Main character Minoru’s goal is to become strong so he can protect his friends if they ever get bullied but that’s just a primary goal. If the Mangaka is showing MC stepping into Martial arts world and having some good matches and going through some real fights then MC should have a “Concrete goal” so it will become that Mangaka is showing that our MC is working hard towards that goal because of which the story becomes interesting. Its still not clear that what Main character is going to do, are they gonna show him riding the flow or they are going to show him as a man with concrete goal and bright vision for future. This is continuing all the way past 300 chapters and the pattern still hasn’t changed a bit. Besides there is no romantic progress despite having romance in it and finally no major events happening after that Okinawa incident and some tournament fights. What set apart History’s strongest desciple kenichi and karate shoukoushi kohinata minoru is Kenichi has a goal to become a Martial arts master and Kohinata Minoru has no goals so far, he is just riding the flow. This the first reason that Manga didn’t get Anime adaptation.
Second reason for not getting Anime adaptation because the pace of Manga is quite slow, I am addicted to Martial arts genre so no matter how the slow the Manga is i will still read it. But i can’t say the same thing for others. Due to slow pace they might stop reading the Manga.
The third reason for not getting an Anime adaptation is too much 18+ content which is not appropriate to show it on TV.
Art and Character design and other things
I would specially like to give 10/10 for art and character design. The character design is superb and detailed and that’s same goes for fight scenes. The fight scenes between characters is also drawn in great detail. One thing i liked about this Manga that it isn’t fixated on Karate, It has Muay thai, Taekwondo, Boxing etc… Also the comedy is great too probably not for kids though.
Manga is surely a great read if you follow thoroughly although you might get board of the slow pace, but if you do follow i am sure you will enjoy it despite the lack of some key points.
