Konosuba Anime Review and Second season!

Konosuba also known as Kono subarashi sekai ni shukufuku wo! is the fantasy gag anime which i termed as a best gag anime of this season and this year, while writing the first impression on the anime, i knew that more anime will come in this year so it’s kinda unfair to say that it’s a best gag anime of this season and this year, and even people started criticizing me saying how can you write that? but after completing the anime today i doubt any better gag anime than this one will come in this year.

I guess even the makers of Konosuba knows that that’s why they have scheduled the second season for the anime but we will come to that later.

Kazuma Satou, a high school student, gamer and shut-in, died on an average day while walking home, by performing the one heroic act of someone’s life. He reawakens in the afterlife, greeted by a beautiful but rude girl named Aqua, who claims to be a goddess that guides the youth whose lives got cut short. Aqua then offers him a choice: to go to heaven, or to get sent to a another world to defeat the Demon King. Of course, Kazuma’s gamer instincts kick in, and he chooses to start a new life in a real-life RPG.

There’s one last choice Kazuma has to make: he is allowed the choice of one thing to take with him to the new world. After puzzling over it, he chooses…Aqua?

Join Kazuma on his adventures as he tries to transfer his virtual gaming knowledge to real-life adventurer experience!

Konosuba Review

Kono Subarashi Sekai Ni Shukufuku Wo
Kono Subarashi Sekai Ni Shukufuku Wo

The theme for this anime is a mixture of Fantasy and Gag, the start of the anime is definitely a common setting i.e the main character is a shut-in and goes outside to buy a game, while coming home he saves a girl from an accident and dies and then he wakes up in afterlife where he meets “Goddess” named “Aqua” who will guide him to right place. But after that the anime starts show its uniqueness, the goddess is pretty rude but she give Kazuma three choices :

  1. Move to Heaven
  2. Start new life from Zero
  3. Move to other world to defeat demon king

Of course Kazuma is a hardcore shut-in gamer so his gamer instinct kicks in and he chooses the third option. Aqua tells him that he is allowed to take one special ability with him. Kazuma decides to make a careful choices since his life in the next world depends on that choice. But the goddess “Aqua” was being pretty rude, so to pay her back he chooses her. Kazuma probably thinks that this choice is the best one but little he knew how useless this goddess was.

They arrive in a fantasy world where, Kazuma slowly slowly starts to realize that Aqua despite having high skill level to become adventurer is not making use of her skills well and is pretty useless. On the other hand Kazuma goes through actual “Reality sucks” moment. Since he didn’t choose any special skills and instead brought this useless goddess with him to the fantasy world not only his skills stay average but the useless and carefree attitude of Aqua starts to take toll over him. The life he lives is not what he imagined, instead of living his life as an adventurer he lives in horse stable and does labour work. Moreover the friends he meet in later episodes are just like Aqua or even worse!

The entire story is about how Kazuma tries his best and in fact very hard to change his lifestyle in the fantasy world but with such useless goddess and his unique friends which are similar to that useless goddess or even worse always end up making things difficult for him. To be more simple : This show gives you a brief outlook of what will happen if a average shut-in game otaku, suddenly went to the different world with a useless partner!

Moreover Anime with similar settings always show how protagonist show their exceptional skills in different word and then suddenly becomes popular or how strong protagonists are. No game No life has a similar concept but when they reach different world they overpower it! Konosuba is exact opposite of that setting.

Gag is life for this Anime

The characters of this Anime may give you a feel that they are made on whim, but it’s exact opposite of that. Each character has suitable role or part to play, characters doesn’t give you a feel like “They are made for delivering good jokes, that people will remember only once!” instead the characters gives you feel of “They are made for delivering good comedy which people will remember”.

Konosuba - Aqua
Konosuba – Aqua

Unlike Gintama which has a mixture of random comedy and calculated comedy, this anime focuses on one thing only and that’s calculated comedy which blends with the overall story of the anime and thanks to that it feels like a natural part of the anime. Even when the characters are in dire crises that may involve entire humanity in that fantasy world, they still make you laugh a lot. Just like Gintama i would not hesitate to give this anime a “Hats off” or a “Standing ovation.” The anime may not put a lot of attention to serious scenes but it strongly emphasizes on the comedy!

Animation and Character design

Konosuba - Aqua and Kazuma
Konosuba – Aqua and Kazuma

I certainly can’t say that the Animation and character designs are the best ever, but i can definitely say that the animation perfectly suits the theme and settings and does the good job of bring out emotions. But i still do think that i would have been much more better if the quality of the animation was bit higher. The quality of animation during scenes where characters are executing their special attacks or the during the scene in the after life is certainly good but for the rest of the thing, i feel that animation is plain.

Second season!

Konosuba – Second season

10th episode of the Anime was the final episode, and soon after the end we got a news that the second season for this Anime has got a green signal! and this anime deserved it. Although the exact date for the premiere of second season is still not announced but we expect the second season to air in the month of June or July.

Wrapping up

This Anime i would definitely recommend everyone to watch it, i bet it won’t disappoint you! It’s certainly may not be the best anime of this year or season but it’s certainly is the best gag anime of this season and year!
