Musaigen No Phantom World Review – Exceptions vs Reailty

Musaigen No Phantom World Review – Its been quite a while since i wrote the first and the last impression on Musaigen No Phantom World Anime and the reason for that is – I wanted to the Anime to cover the entire story. So today the last episode of the series aired and my overall opinion on the series was – “It was good Anime series.” Although it wasn’t the series that you would make you expect more. This Anime was like – You can watch it for killing the time. But i won’t say that it comes under the must watch category despite being a good series. As you will read the further review you will know why i am saying this!

Synopsis

You can’t believe everything you see, or can’t see, for that matter. In Musaigen no Phantom World, Phantoms, beings that blur the line between illusion and reality, wander around right under the noses of unsuspecting humans. Their origins are mysterious and few can see themーthat is, until a research facility bombing spreads a virus that grants the ability to. Humans with special powers are given the task of sealing the troublemaking Phantoms.

Haruhiko Ichijou is one such Phantom Hunter. Not a very good one, however. Possessing a wealth of useless knowledge, a tendency to go off on tangents, and a rather slow Phantom-sealing ability, he and his rambunctious teammate Mai Kawakami are at the bottom of the Phantom Hunter ladder at Hosea Academy. In order to become stronger, they recruit new teammates and develop new powers, only to stumble upon secrets surrounding Phantoms and the circumstances surrounding the mysterious bombing of the Alayashiki Research Facility.

Musaigen No Phantom World Review

The Main attraction of this series was “Cute girl characters” and the secondary attraction of this series was “The strong story or synopsis.” In other words the above sentence sums up my entire view regarding this series. This Anime series had its priorities backward. To be more accurate the season was more like a “prequel” to actual story. For explaining my view on more simple words we will go through the synopsis once again :-

You can’t believe everything you see, or can’t see, for that matter. In the above synopsis the first paragraph of the series is the introduction in episode 1 which just take 1 or 2 mins of the episode 1 and the rest of the part of the episode 1 focuses on the second paragraph which stretches till episode 12. What i meant to say is you wait and watch the entire series with this feeling – “Something is going to happen right now!” but in the end nothing happens throughout the entire series. The series only have one antagonist which appears at the last two episodes of the series i.e 11 and 12 episode of the series and the previous 10 episode focus on character introduction and their side story. So you will feel like there are too many things which were left unexplained so those things won’t be counted as plot holes if second season were to be made.

So if you’re really going to watch this series because you are expecting a strong series like Ajin or Erased or like Dimension W, then disappointment is going to hit you hard. This series is definitely not a strong one but its fun to watch series and especially a good series when you are looking something to kill the time. So it will be in my top recommendation list if you are asking for anime that you can watch to kill the time. Also the lead male character Ichijo Haruhiko is smart but when it comes to fight he is extremely weak and lame the only moment he was badass was during last episode while defeating first and final antagonist of the series.

Animation and Character design

Musaigen No Phantom World is Animated by “Kyoto animation” and as usual they did a fabulous job with this series too. The quality is extremely good in fact its of same level as “Free – Iwatobi Swimming Club” and “Hibike! Euphonium.” Especially i liked the character designs and especially “Kawakami Mai” is my number one favourite Anime girl of this series!! and this entire season!!

Romance

As i mentioned above earlier that this season was more like a “prequel” before the actual series. So we didn’t get any to see any romance between characters but we did get to see the development of the romance. It seems the lead female character of this series “Kawakami Mai” has started to develop feelings for the lead male character “Ichijo Haruhiko.” Or at least that what it seems so there are pretty good chances that we will get to see the development of relationship between two lead characters if second season is green lit.

Pros and cons

Overall the series is good and fun to watch, this series pretended to be strong but its not that strong in fact fantasy, slice of life genre suits well to this series. So according to me these are the pros and cons for the series :-

Pros – Light hearted fantasy, action and slice of life series which is fun to watch. The series majorly focuses on character introduction so the past story of each and every character is elaborated.

Cons – Not much of character development, series was like a prequel so there were too many things which were left unexplained. Also as i mentioned above the past of each and every character is elaborated but that does not happen with lead female character – “Kawakami Mai.”

Wrapping up

You will like this series if you are watching this as fantasy, slice of life point of view and this series will be a disappointment if you are expecting strong story from it.
