As the world is in the middle of an industrial revolution, a monster appears that cannot be defeated unless its heart, which is protected by a layer of iron, is pierced. By infecting humans with its bite, the monster can create aggressive and undead creatures known as Kabane. On the island Hinomoto, located in the far east, people have built stations to shelter themselves from these creatures. People access the station, as well as transport wares between them, with the help of a locomotive running on steam, called Hayajiro. Ikoma, a boy who lives in the Aragane station and helps to build Hayajiro, creates his own weapon called Tsuranukizutsu in order to defeat the creatures. One day, as he waits for an opportunity to use his weapon, he meets a girl named Mumei, who is excused from the mandatory Kabane inspection. During the night, Ikoma meets Mumei again as he sees Hayajiro going out of control. The staff on the locomotive has turned into the creatures. The station, now under attack by Kabane, is the opportunity Ikoma has been looking for.

Kabaneri of the iron fortress episode 1 review

Since the synopsis covered the 90% of the event happened in the first episode i won’t re-explain what happened in the first episode, although i will cover the remaining 10% and will give my opinion on the first episode.

Kabaneri of the iron fortress
Kabaneri of the iron fortress

As the synopsis says the story of the Kabaneri of the iron fortress is based on the industrial revolution which is suffering through Zombie Apocalypse, although zombies here in the series are called with new name known as Kabane. Not knowing the reason where these kabane appeared from, the people have built stations to shelter themselves, the people use steam locomotives to travel from one place to another. If a normal person is bitten by kabane he is transformed into kabane. So this series is your typical zombie apocalypse series.

The zombie in the series are the undead people and have their heart covered with a layer of Iron.  Typically in a zombie apocalypse series there is one basic rule which is always followed and that is – “You can always kill a zombie by smashing his head,” Kabaneri of the iron fortress did something different, in this series their are two ways of killing a zombie (not mentioned in synopsis), First is you can kill them by piercing their heart which is covered by the layer of iron (as i mentioned in synopsis), and the second way is killing them by beheading them.

Kabaneri of the iron fortress - Ikona
Kabaneri of the iron fortress – Ikoma

The Main character of the series is “Ikoma” a boy who lives at Aragane station. Is building a new weapon that can pierce the heart of Kabane, He helps building the locomotives, the people who arrive at Aragane station goes through mandatory inspection to check if they are bitten by the Kabane, during that time he meets Mumei a girl who’s excused from mandatory inspection. After that a person who is suspected to have bitten by the kabane runs away, he is chased by the authorities so they can kill him before he is transformed.

Ikoma understands that the man is not bitten by kabane and tries to cover him because of which he is suspected and thrown into the prison, at that night he meets Mumei once again and notices that Aragane station is attacked by kabane. Ikoma runs back to take his new weapon which is kept in his room but there he is attacked by a kabane, although he manages to defeat kabane with his new weapon, but he notices that his bitten by the kabane on his hand, as he notices the virus spreading throughout his body he decides to stop the spreading virus and reverse the transformation.

Ikoma – Badass Mode

He wraps himself (his upper body) tight with a belt to slow down the speed of virus spreading inside the body to its maximum limit and then chokes his neck, as his hearts pumps more blood, he coughs it out because of which the transformation is reversed and he comes back to normal. Although this is just a theoretical explanation on how he reversed the transformation but his determination of not transforming into kabane played the big role. Also the guy (Main character) designed the weapon to defeat kabane its obvious that he must have known a way to reverse or stop the transformation with his long research. In the mean time Mumei defeats another Kabane by behanding him and i have to admit that she herself is pretty badass…

The first episode of the series managed to give me goosebumps as i was shivering with excitement when the Main character reversed the transformation. Although this series feels like Attack of the Titan, despite radiating same feelings this series turned out to be an exceptional one. I liked how they modified the concept of zombies and invented more ways (well at least 2) of defeating them.

Kabaneri of the iron fortress - Mumei
Kabaneri of the iron fortress – Mumei

Further more i liked the Main characters both male and female, Ikoma – he is smart as well as badass and knows how things works and take decisions according to the situations. His presence of mind is good too!! Mumei – She is cute and at the same time she is badass, and has a strong sense of justice like Ikoma.

The main character gives the same vibes as the Erren jagger from Attack of the Titan gave but thankfully he is not a revenge idiot. Erren is the only main character which i hated..

Since the setting of this series is based on the industrial revolution, this series become unpredictable, Why? well what i think is if this was a series based in 21st century, it would have become a series similar to High school of the dead, It would have been easy to predict the movements of the characters and the government, because the actions they would have taken to ensure the safety of civilians are the common ones that we all know!

Mumei - Badass Mode
Mumei – Badass Mode

But in the industrial revolution the country and government both are under development in such era if a zombie apocalypse does happen then what measures the people and the government will take to ensure the safety of civilians it would be exciting to see that, its something we cannot predict..

Animation and Character designs

The animation is 50% similar to the animation of God Eater Anime and seriously i hate this kind of animation which gives the feel that Anime is made of some plastic material. The regular animation would have been much much better but thanks to the story we can overlook the animation. Because its the story which gives a major impact rather than its animation. Although the character of the series are drawn very well especially the main character Ikoma who looks completely different when he enters badass mode.

With so much exceptional anime coming out right one after the other this season, this is another gem which i will recommend you guys to must watch it..
