Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju is really one beautiful anime of this season which took us to the roots i.e during old days when listening to stories from someone else was soothing and was something that will bring all your emotions to surface. Showa Gernroku Rakugo Shinju shows us the exact overview of how the era is changing along with people, their basic needs and their needs of entertainment.
Behind the crazy fandom of Erased and Ajin hides this series brilliant, soothing, clever, emotional and heart wrenching story that is definitely a must watch series of this season. Last month when i wrote an article on Top 15 Anime you need to watch this season, I did not add Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju in to the list the the reason for it was simple i did not watched the series. But yesterday i finally decided to watch it and ended up “Binge watching.”
Without a doubt if i had watch this series earlier then it would have been on the number 1 rank in the list.
Rakugo storytelling—one of the oldest and most important of the Japanese arts. Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu is the story of Rakugo and those who build their lives around mastering it, and of the fast-changing nation of Japan in the days after the great war.
For Yotarou, Rakugo is a chance to build a new life after being released from prison. For Yakumo, it’s a lifelong struggle to find his voice. For Sukeroku, it comes as naturally as breathing. Rakugo is what ties these three very different men’s stories together, and what brought the woman who would change everything into their lives. On-stage and off, the stories of Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu are truly unforgettable

Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju Review
This series is kind of series where you are not able to describe its greatness in suitable words even though you have lots of words and things you want to say about it, and and suddenly you will notice that you are lost of words. This series revolves around an oldest art in the Japanese History and the lives of the people who spend their whole lives mastering the art and that’s “Rakugo” a verbal form of entertainment where artists sits on stage in front of huge crowd and do verbal comedy. Rakugo is also known as the art of storytelling.
The people who make others smile are the brightest people, yet they are the people who face lot of tough problems in their life is what this series teaches us but at the same time this series also shows the life of the people who admire them and try to be like them.
The main character of this series is a criminal who’s out of prison and intends to learn Rakugo from the great artist “Yakumo” although he has never taken a disciple in his entire life but to everyone’s surprise he takes the ex-prisoner as his disciple and gives him a name “Yotaro.” As Yotaro begins his new life he meets lot of people as well as Yakumo’s ward “Konatsu.” Konatsu’s father Shin was a famous Rakugo artist and was Yakumo’s brother disciple i.e they studied under same master. After her father’s tragic death Yakumo becomes Konatsu’s guardian. Konatsu used to love her father’s storytelling and just like him she wanted to be a Rakugo artist but unfortunately that’s not a path available for women. On top of it she also bears a grudge against Yakumo and thinks he is the cause of his fathers death not knowing what happened between Yakumo and her father, Yakumo decides to tell her everything.
The above paragraph tells almost the entire story of the series but its easily understandable that Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju doesn’t have a single protagonist (main character) this series has three protagonist Yotaro, Yakumo and Shin. That’s because the series great focus on Yakumo’s past which involves Konatsu’s father Shin too at the start of the series you may think that Yakumo and Shin are just the two supporting characters but that’s not true these two character overshadows Yotaro. Since this story is heavily focused on the past life of Yakumo at some point you may even forget that there is a main character of the series called “Yotaro.” Some of you may find this unfair because in this series Yotaro is not a centre of attraction and none of his character development is shown but this is necessary. Its because Yakumo decides to tell Yotaro and Konatsu everything about his past and his struggle, that story itself triggers the character development of Yotaro as it completely changes him.
The beauty of this series is that it draws you in as you watch the series filled with struggle, pain, laughter, smile and tears as the characters try to survive the changing era and tries their best to pave the path for Rakugo to survive in the ever changing era. Not many series are capable of giving you goosebumps with sheer drama and even if a series manages to do it, i doubt it will be as intense as Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju manages to do it! A 400 years of history in one art that’s complied in mere 13 episodes and after watching it you will get a feeling that you have watched 20+ episodes, that’s what this series is capable of. As i mentioned earlier, “this series is kind of series where you are not able to describe its greatness in suitable words even though you have lots of words and things you want to say about it, and and suddenly you will notice that you are lost of words,” well that’s what happening to me now!
Animation and Character Designs
The Animation is awesome and well done which perfectly suits the theme of the series and so does the characters. This series is kinda razor sharp, well i mean you constantly feel the confidence radiating from the series from every perspective it doesn’t matter if its animation, characters, story, dialogues, the overall script and direction. You can literally feel the confidence which increases by each and every episode.
Sounds and Background Music
There is not much of music in the series but the traditional Japanese music which is there in the series will something that will give you goosebumps.
The official website of Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju announced on saturday that the series will get a second season and the second season will be titled as Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju – Sukeroku Futatabi Hen (Sukeroku Anew Arc).
The staff also revealed that the story of the new season will be focused on the modern era and the story of Yakumo’s past is over.
Well this anime was certainly a dark horse of this season, I was expecting it to be another folk story of theatre plays that use to take place old days but it was not. It was something that was beyond my and everyone’s expectations. So as for the recommendation – Yes i would definitely recommend this series to everyone and will personally request to go and watch it. It is something like you have never seen before and you won’t get another series like this.
