Kono Sekai no Katasumi ni Movie Review – Slice of Feels!!

Kono Sekai no Katasumi ni or In the corner of this world is Another historical film set on bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, this movie gave me vibes that it will be similar to Grave of fireflies or Barefoot Gen. But when i got the chance to watch this movie, I thought i should avoid this opportunity because i am not fond of watching another movie which literally tears apart your emotions and makes you cry like an idiot.

On the other hand my other half was telling me to grab this opportunity and watch this movie. So i listened to him and went ahead and made decision to watch this movie. Thankfully i was able to hold myself very well.

PS – The review contains spoilers for the movie, so read it at your own cost. Also the images in the review are from the movie trailer.

Kono Sekai no Katasumi ni Movie Review

The trailer of the movie was pretty promising and the movie was promising too. However, after watching the movie i felt that this is a type of movie which came silently and will depart silently. Unlike Kimi No Na Wa this won’t create huge ruckus on the box office. No i am not saying that this movie is bad but rather i am saying that this movie has a silent ambiance around it. Its not a movie which you can excitingly recommend to someone to watch, and why is that? lets see it now.

The movie centers around a girl character named “Suzu” who is an 18 year old wife with an artistic view and approach towards the world. She is clumsy but at the same time she is peaceful minded girl who loves her family a lot. Her family background is poor but she tries to live each day healthily and happily.

As i mentioned earlier that Suzu has artistic view and approach towards the world she lives in, and this artistic approach also applies to her dreams and other small things happening in her life. In movie we see her friends, family and the man she is destined to marry. But one sudden proposal changes everything and she marries a man whom she barely knows and moves to the naval port city known as Kure with her husband’s family.

The film setting is done in the period of world war 2 that took place in the year of 1944-1945. Hence when we see the naval port city Kure for the first time in the movie, The ambiance from the world war 2 era increases even more. So as Suzu moves with her Husbands’s family to Kure, she quickly becomes one of the member of the family. From this point on the real movie start. Suzu carries with her daily life activities in the midst of all the tensed situation that forecast the World war 2 affecting civilians.

However during that time, for the people living during that era war and all the bombings that’s going to take place in future was pretty unexpected thing and way Suzu lives her life in the midst of all the tensed atmosphere depicts that nobody was expecting that war will become even worse. On the other hand Suzu’s sister in law tries to create trouble in family for her, just for one petty reason, She did not liked Suzu taking her place in family. And her sister in law does this despite the fact that she is married and she now has her own family.

Suzu’s father in law and husband both works for Japanese military indirectly but not as soldiers. One works as civil official on military base and other works in factory, and since no one was expecting war, young men who are drafted, family throws them a party or more like a celebration to see them off.  However years later we see war affecting general population.

We see the depletion of food rations slowly and steadily and people struggling to survive. In the midst of all this Suzu tries to cleverly balance food rations and budget for her family with unbalanced success rate. She even takes help from black market or red light district to make sure that her family stays well. Considering the clumsiness of Suzu, her attitude and efforts to keep her family well and safe gives us a clear explanation on her personality, saying – Despite the fact that she is clumsy and absent minded but she does her own efforts to help her family.

Although that doesn’t change the fact that Suzu is struggling to survive in a looming shadow of terror which can force her to take tough decisions.

Opinion

Kono Sekai no Katasumi ni or In the corner of this world is not a happy film, but its rather a powerful and emotional film which depicts the terror of world’s most horrifying incident happened in the history of warfare and it depicts the tales of the people who were affected by that incident.

Its not that the movie is sad from the start but rather it first depicts the happy life of the people living in the city of Kure which is later devastated because of the world war 2 and in all the things happening an 18 year old wife doing whatever she can to survive with her family. In short this is the pattern followed by the movie which makes it a drastic movie, which has drama and heartbreaking emotional scenes.

The character like Suzu who has an artistic view and approach towards her life and the grim things happening because of world war 2. Makes you wonder why in the world such a thing happened and that’s enough to break you down. Because the movie feels more realistic, basically you try to place yourself in the lives of the people who struggled to live in the terror of world war 2 hoping for a better and beautiful future. And if a movie is capable of making you do this, easily confirms how excellently this movie is executed!

Art and Animation

Since the story is set in the era of 1944-1945 they went for the old art and animation style which perfectly suits the nature of the story. In think instead of a realistic art and animation this one suits better, since it gives the movie an outlook of some really old movie, because of which the movie radiates the calm ambiance.

Wrapping up

Overall the plot was pretty straight forward and simple on top of that it was easy to understand. I won’t hesitate to say now that this movie for me at least is better than Kimi No Na Wa (No offense intended) but if i generally compare them i think Kono sekai no katasumi ni is better, also the plot and setting gives the movie an advantage but if you separate both the movies, genre wise, then each of them is in the league of their own. So tell me what do you think about this movie, and i will be glad to hear them!

Overall Movie Rating – 4.8/5
