Haikyuu Anime Review

Haikyuu Anime Review – Average vibe but in actual it is a Beast!!

Haikyuu Anime Review – The last time i thought that a particular anime was giving an average vibe but it turned out to be beast, was, i guess a year ago, when i was skeptical about watching “Initial D” anime series. To be honest before watching Inital D, i was in trouble, because i was not able to decide that i should watch it or not and eventually i skipped the series 2-3 times but then i finally decided to watch it and it turned out the anime was awesome. Similar thing happened with Haikyuu. I first thought it as an average show but it turned out to be a beast!!! and now finally i feel that i am glad i watched this show.

Synopsis

Inspired after watching a volleyball ace nicknamed “Little Giant” in action, small-statured Shouyou Hinata revives the volleyball club at his middle school. The newly-formed team even makes it to a tournament; however, their first match turns out to be their last when they are brutally squashed by the “King of the Court,” Tobio Kageyama. Hinata vows to surpass Kageyama, and so after graduating from middle school, he joins Karasuno High School’s volleyball team—only to find that his sworn rival, Kageyama, is now his teammate.

Thanks to his short height, Hinata struggles to find his role on the team, even with his superior jumping power. Surprisingly, Kageyama has his own problems that only Hinata can help with, and learning to work together appears to be the only way for the team to be successful. Based on Haruichi Furudate’s popular shounen manga of the same name, Haikyuu!! is an exhilarating and emotional sports comedy following two determined athletes as they attempt to patch a heated rivalry in order to make their high school volleyball team the best in Japan.

Haikyuu Anime Review

With all the sports anime series i have watched, they had some kind of intense aura around them. Such intensity that even if you read the synopsis of the show, you will be forced to watch them. In my case Haikyuu did not gave me that kind of vibe at all! But all of a sudden i decided to give it a try, because the decision of skipping the show was killing me inside. And so i decided to watch the season 1, since at that time Haikyuu had no season 2 and also there was no news when the season 2 was going to be released.

Haikyuu Anime Review – Impressions

To be honest, when i first watched the season 1, i got hooked into it. My favorite sports are racing, basketball, baseball, football and boxing. And since there were anime series based on these sports, i watched them all. The only sports i didn’t know about is tennis and volleyball. Baby steps Anime got me hooked on to tennis with its sheer focus on amazing character development, whereas in case of Haikyuu it got me hooked on to volleyball with character development and because of different types of characters with different personality which clearly stands out.

Haikyuu Anime Review – Stopping Ushiwaka

Haikyuu has character development, but more than that unlike other sports anime series i have watched, Haikyuu didn’t let me feel that – “In this show only the main character and his rival and coach are the important person!” instead, it clearly emphasized on the importance of each and every character that was introduced in the anime series. I think, that, this is one of the greatest plus point of Haikyuu. Viewers are not only concerned about the main characters, the coach and the rival, but also the opponents, the team mates and any other character from the outside. According to me this is one of the unique quality of Haikyuu Anime.

Haikyuu Anime Review - Kageyama
Haikyuu Anime Review – Kageyama

Japanese high school sports anime series doesn’t really focuses on the hard school schedule and this was the same case regarding Haikyuu, but Haikyuu gives a more in depth look at that schedule and hard school life. What’s more it utilizes that in depth look and combines with the struggle characters are facing which makes the anime series more interesting to watch. Haikyuu focuses on the story of the school who was once famous but lost all that over a certain period of time, at first you may feel that the main character and the rival makes big impact on the team and everything start to change.

However that’s not true at all, the one who makes the biggest impact on the team are the seniors. Their struggles to make their school volleyball team great once again in actual triggers the change. The main character and the rival only acts as a catalyst to accelerate that change. Also one thing, Every sports anime series has one character which is natural born genius, in fact Haikyuu has two of them, One is skilled but does not know how to co-operate in other words the rival, and one acts on instinct and has awesome physical reflexes but he is an idiot, in other words the main character. Its thumb rule of sports anime series that such guys always stand out and these are the ones who are overwhelming. In Haikyuu that’s not the case, even though the characters are genius they doesn’t stand out and in fact feels like they are normal players.

Haikyuu Anime Review – Character development

Speaking of character development, earlier in the review i did mentioned about how Haikyuu emphasizes on the importance of each character, Regarding that when you compare it with other sports anime series. Haikyuu somewhat leads in terms of developing character its not only concerned about developing the main characters or team, but also the coach and the rival, the opponents, the team mates and any other character from the outside.

Haikyuu Anime Review - Season 3 ending
Haikyuu Anime Review – Season 3 ending

The season 2 of Haikyuu is a proper evidence for that. However, if they ever decide to make 4th season for Haikyuu, then you will see more such character development. Because after season 3 ends the series will switch to individual character development as per it is shown in the manga. So i do really hope that they will continue with the anime series because the anime doesn’t feel complete by the end of the season 3.

Haikyuu Anime Review – Humor

Haikyuu also perfectly balances humor and other comic elements with serious scenes and serious matches, overall it makes anime really fun to watch and thus makes it a perfect stress healer.

Haikyuu Anime Review – Animation

Haikyuu is a carefully animated series, and the animation is not sloppy or crappy at all. However it focuses on two different animation styles one is hand drawn and the other one is clear and clean. To my surprise the combination of these animation style is perfect and it suits very well.

However they used it simultaneously, Hand drawn animation is used for displaying intensity of the scene, but most of the animation is clear and clean as shown in the above image. I think the feel of “Awe” that animators want to give to the viewers is perfectly delivered.

Haikyuu Anime Review – The hidden one sided romance

Haikyuu Anime Review - Michimiya and Sawamura
Haikyuu Anime Review – Michimiya and Sawamura

Haikyuu contains hidden one sided romance between boys volleyball captain Sawamura and girls volleyball captain Michimiya. Its Michimiya who has crush on Sawamura, however there is no romantic progress in the anime as it focuses more on sport and hence it remains hidden. So much that its hard to realize from the first two seasons. However, in Season 3 it becomes clear that Michimiya has crush on Sawamura and that’s kinda cute to watch!

Wrapping up

I will be straight with my opinion here, by reading the above review its quite obvious that i liked the anime. For me at least it was a perfect anime series, where everything was good!! What do you think about Haikyuu Anime? do tell your views, i will be glad to hear them.
