Fate/Grand Order First Order Episode 1 – January 1st of 2017 turned out to be surprisingly a good start, thanks to the Fate/Grand Order Episode 1 release. But more than that i was surprised to see how the episode was executed. I was pretty skeptical on that and glad it turned out to be better than what i had imagined.
Those who are reading this review – If you have no idea that if this anime is a continuation of the previous fate series or a new story. I want to tell you that, this is a new story, I’ve not played any games related to fate series, but still i found this first episode of new series linking back to the old series of fate, so even if this is a new series with a new story we won’t feel that we are missing something, and it seems that this news series will continue to do so.
The story is set in the year 2015, during the final era over which magic still held a strong influence. The humanity survival and security organization Chaldea was established to observe the world that can only be seen by magic and the world that can only be measured by science; as well as to prevent the final extinction of humanity.
Thanks to the efforts of many researchers, the path of human history has been ensured for 100 years into the future. However, without warning, the realm of the future that was under constant observation by Chaldea vanished. The extinction of humanity in 2017 was observed—no, confirmed.
The apparent cause of the extinction was in the Japanese city of Fuyuki in 2004. In that city, there was an “unobservable realm” which had never existed until now.
Chaldea issued the Grand Order for a “Holy Grail Expedition,” to investigate, uncover, and possibly destroy the singularity that apparently will cause the extinction of humanity.

Fate/Grand Order First Order Episode 1 Review
We moved into 2017, so the plot of the series might throw you off a bit, as it states in the anime that, humanity went extinct in 2016, and in 2017, the extinction was confirmed. So for me it was like watching the movie 2012 once again, which was based on Mayan’s prediction of humanity’s extinction.
I don’t know why but i felt it as an irony that this new series, “Fate/Grand Order”, strikes back with the same thing (however its different from Mayan’s theory). On top of it, the humanity’s extinction in 2017, acts as a base level plot for the overall story of the anime series that we are going to see, in the upcoming episodes.
So, in short what i mean is the first episode was more like an one-hour long epilogue to the series, which steadily launched the plot progression and the core aspects that were shown in the first episode are holding it firmly. For now its just episode 1 and there is still room for improvement but still the episode was decent enough. The execution was good and they didn’t waste any time with the events happening in the episode. So the order of the events shown in the episode was something like this –
Organization watching over humanity confirms its extinction > Introduction two the two main leads > Tragedy strikes, organization base destroyed > One of the main lead is dying > Forms contract with spirit before dying > time slip > defeating the core > Finding out who is the real mastermind > Holy grail expedition to save humanity.
That’s why at first you may feel that lots of things are going on, even though its a first episode. But surprisingly they are well balanced. Also what surprised me is, Mash (the main female lead) forming a contract with a spirit and became half human and half spirit. I mean the usual fate series had characters we had mages andcharacters which got stronger by learning the techniques from spirits. For example – Emiya Shirou used “Unlimited blade works,” but forming a contract with a spirit and becoming one single being was a new thing for me.
Usually a fused being is said to be the strongest being, well at least in anime. But Fate/Grand Order First Order Episode 1 shot down that usual cliche and made Mash stronger but not overpowered, and that was great because that actually creates room of character development as long as the plot will continue progressing. So we can pretty much expect that we will get to see some struggling battles which will be fun to watch!
Fights are not the only things that are going to be fun, story of the series will be interesting too! the characters that appeared in the first episode are all cliched characters however, Considering the episode as an epilogue and just the start, we can see the possibility where whole new varieties of characters will appear which won’t be your regular cliched characters. One thing i liked about the execution of this episode is how the staff manipulated the feelings of their viewers over characters.
For example – The episode has a tsundere captain, which i found to be an annoying one despite being a fan of tsundere. But when i saw her dying in the episode i felt for her! The feelings during that scene ripped me, what’s more getting killed by the person whom she trusted a lot, makes it even more worse.
The above example clearly specifies the antagonist was someone among the good guys who pretended to be good. However that’s not the only thing, soon the antagonist revealed that he was tasked with the job of destroying the humanity. Which clearly indicates that there is someone big behind all the events, who is controlling everything. So at first they made it look like Saber was the antagonist, but then revealed that the antagonist was someone among the good guys and at the end they indicated that real mastermind is someone else.
The episode was good, it clearly explained what was going on and gave clear indication on what will happen in upcoming episodes. The characters were well utilized according to their assigned roles, because of which the episode can be considered as the good start. Animation was good, but not that great its still need some improvements on the colors. Overall a decent episode which tells you that there is something which you can look forward to.
Overall Episode Rating – 3.5/5
